Chili Cook-Off in the Ord Mountains, Saturday October 26

Join us in the Ord Mountains south-east of Barstow, California (specific location to follow) for a return of this Sierra Club Desert Peaks Section classic event after a several year hiatus. Whether you like your chili Texas-style (no beans), traditional, or vegetarian, bring your favorite recipe or just hearty taste buds. Cook for free or taste for $10. In a slight departure from previous tradition, we’re going to allow basic preparations to be done at home so that everyone can spend more time hiking than cooking.

We’ll kick off the event with Happy Hour at 5pm, during which cooks can finalize preparing their chili dishes. This will be followed by chili tasting and judging, and then with a campfire to end the evening. Prizes will be awarded by category, with special recognition for the spiciest chili, best presentation, most original recipe, and best overall chili. Hiking opportunities nearby include DPS-listed peak East Ord Mountain, West Ord and Ord Mountain (on the California P2K list).

Email your choice as Taster or Chef and chili type to receive directions, contest specs, and hiking activities to desertpeakssection@gmail.com. Hosts: Kathy Rich, Daryn Dodge, Catherine Rossbach, Jim Fleming, Sandy Lara.
