DPS Newsletter
From the Chairman--- Abe Siemens
Our 1967-68 year, although not quite complete, shows signs of being an excellent one. There are, however, areas in which the effectiveness of the DPS can be improved.
Although San Francisco keeps us informed on conservation issues of national and regional importance, I have often felt poorly directed on our local conservation issues which directly affect desert areas known to us. Such problems include mining activity within National Monuments, and desecration of desert areas now unprotected which should be protected. Although the DPS should continue to be an active climbing and exploration group, DPSers, with their first hand knowledge of desert areas, are well qualified to speak out on desert conservation matters. One of our purposes, according to our charter, is "to aid in the conservation and preservation of desert wilderness areas." The opportunity to better inform our members on desert conservation issues and to convert such knowledge to action I leave to the new Executive Committee.
The trip leadership on DPS outings, although generally, good, leaves room for improvement. The Angeles Chapter is sponsoring a Basic Leadership Training Course. The first meeting will begin May 16th, l968. See page 87 of the current schedule. Leaders and assistants, both scheduled, and prospective are urged to attend.

DEATH NOTICE ---
It is with regret that the death of DPS Member WAYNE Q INMAN is announced. Wayne joined us in Jan 1967, and was killed March 23rd. while climbing in the Sierra near North Palisade Peak. He was 20 years of age and lived in West Los Angeles. Our sympathies are extended to his parents and brother.
