DESERT PEAKS SECTION NEWSLETTER NO. 51
ANGELES CHAPTER - SIERRA CLUB

  October 15, 1957

Dear Desert Peaker:

WHEELER PEAK really came in for a lot of attention this summer. On their respective vacation trips, Dick Kenyon and the Heningers stopped by to see the area firsthand, and came away most enthusiastic. On August 25 the Great Basin Range National Park Association was formed at a meeting held at Lehman Caves National Monument. At the meeting, DPS member Weldon Heald.,was elected Vice President of the new Association, and Leslie Gould, Chairman of the Toiyabe Chapter, was elected a Director. So now the Wheeler Peak area national park movement is well under way.

The arrival of autumn found our section conducting climbs of two emblem peaks in rapid-fire order. Dick Kenyon, assisted by Ralph Merten, led the usual sizable crowd up popular MT. TELESCOPE on September 21 and 22. There were few takers for the surprisingly strenuous climb of Wildrose Peak Saturday. But people kept drifting into Thorndike Campground until we had a sizable campfire circle that evening. An early start and a cool day Sunday made the hike to Telescope seem like a breeze. Everyone was back at Mahogany Flats early in the afternoon. The fact that three cars had unrepaired flat tires may have motivated some of us a bit. We all enjoyed having Lynn Spaulding, Death Valley N. M. engineer, along for the week end.

October 5 and 6 brought out 15 hardy souls on Vern Jones' and Don Clarke's long trip up emblem MT. MONTGOMERY and qualifying BOUNDARY PEAK. They started from the Trail Canyon road end at 4:15 a.m, with a frigid 10° temperature. As the day progressed, it warmed up to a breezy 20° on the ridge. Not to be outdone by the Telescope climbers, who reported seeing seven wild burros, the Boundary-Montgomery climbers scared up a dozen mustangs. Unusual result of the trip was four new emblem members: Joan Jones, Miles Brubacher, Bob Boyd and Dick Kenyon.

Two of our members deserve special thanks for building up our DPS reputation for being on the ball. TRUDY HUNT organized an exhibit at the Harwood Newcomers Party with our DPS Scrapbook and some material from Parker Severson and the Werners. At the Annual Chapter Banquet PARKER SEVERSON'S desert palm oasis decorations for the DPS table won us the prize for the best-decorated table.

There are two more DPS trips coming up in the near future. On October 19-20, Parker and I are leading a backpack trip to Mt. Inyo, On November 2-3, Walt Heninger has organized another one of his inimitable bus trips to Death Valley. On the Mt. Inyo trip ee are taking along a new Casper Casperson model register to dedicate the newly named peak with. We invite all who enjoy strenuous backpacking to join the party. On Walt's trip to Death Valley you'll have
