ANGELES CHAPTER COUNCIL REPORT I attended the Council Meeting at the Angeles Chapter Headquarters on September 23. It was anything but boring.

First there was an announcement of the Chapter Banquet on March 21, 1992 being moved from the Pacifica Hotel to a new location.

Then attention was focused on the Backroad Explorers. Jay Lawrence, Council Representative for the Backroad Explorers (BRE) showed us a book that they had spent many hours over many months preparing on the Desert Protection Act road use. It was a very thick book, and I would have loved to have studied it. Jay only brought one copy to the meeting and time didn't permit detailed discussion.

The BRE got quite a reaction from many Council members with such questions brought up as: Is the BRE using the Sierra Club's name to further their own cause to get recognition in Congress? Would they be more effective in their goals without the Sierra Club? One member of the Council said they were like a "festering wound" in the Sierra Club. Jay remained calm to his opposition.

The Council Chair, Robin Ives, adjourned the meeting a little after 9:30pm.

Respectfully submitted,
Patty Kline
