The Desert Sage
1991 *Starting Our 51st Season* 216
From the Chair
In past DESERT SAGES the column "FROM THE CHAIR" has covered a wide range of topics. This year instead of hearing it from the chair, each of the DPS officers will prepare a more or less regular column for their areas of responsibility. Thus you will hear from John McCully on outings, Wendy Ruess on our financial situation, Christine Mitchell on minutes and membership, Bill Gray on programs and the banquet, Pat Acheson on conservation, Patty Kline on Council doings, Dale Van Dalsem on mountain records, Dave Jurasevich on the Road and Peak Guide and myself on archives and history. Ron Jones, the SAGE editor will receive all these inputs and add editorials etc as appropriate.
Some items worth emphasis:
  • This is the 50th anniversary of the DPS. How about making a special effort to introduce new people to our desert peaks and the DPS.
  • The Sierra Club has an incentive program for Groups and Sections to recruit new SC members. One half of the first years dues is given to the organization that did the recruiting. I have application forms that give the DPS identifying number, S-748, that is needed to obtain the funds. Let me know how many forms you will need. Act now! (before 12/31/91)
  • As explained by Wendy, the subscription to the SAGE will go to $10 on Oct 1.
  • The revised Road and Peak Guide is expected to be available at the December meeting.
  • There will be no DPS meeting in Jan because the first Wed is New Year's Day.
  • List Finishers are urged to attend a membership meeting and to sign the LF Roll.
TREA$URER'$ REPORT

The DPS 1991 fiscal year ended on September 30th. As of that date we had $1182 in the bank. Our income for the year was $6628; our expenses $6697, resulting in a $70 loss. We've adopted a budget for the coming year to turn that loss into a modest gain.

California's fiscal crisis means we must now pay taxes on everything we sell, including our Sage subscriptions. Therefore the subscription price has been increased to $10. Prices of DPS merchandise have also been raised slightly to cover the increased tax rate and to better reflect our shipping and handling costs.

We have a complete stock of DPS patches and pins, and a limited supply of colorful t-shirts and sweat shirts emblazoned with the DPS logo. Show off your allegiances and order a shirt or patch today, using the adjacent order form.
