We then had a two part
program. First, Bill T described the history of the beginnings of the Desert
Peeks Section. Bill led the group in an inspirational reading of the DPS'
"Prescribed Oath" which is printed in the first DPS Membership Roll book. This
book was started on October 10, 1941 by early Sierra Club desert hikers
although they didn't officially become a Sierra Club section until 1945. This
gives us four years to celebrate different versions of fifty-ness! Bill T has
written an article published in the July 1991 SAGE on the DPS origins and
history. A highlight of this talk was the introduction of several of these
early hikers who made it to the banquet. Several also spoke briefly recounting
personal favorite DPS stories. Some of the illustrious members present were
Fred Johnson (one of the charter members in 1941 and 6th qualifying member of
the DPS, John Robinson, Sam Fink, Louise Werner, Walt Wheelock, Lloyd Balsam
and Willard Dean who also entered several photos of early DPS hikes for the
photo contest. The main program was a slide show presented by Jalien Tully
and Noella Ballenger entitled "Sea of Sand, Land of Water". This was a very
well produced program coordinated with music and narration which featured
scenes of their trip in Namibia in southwest Africa. |
