DPS Banquet

The Desert Peaks Section celebrated 50 years of climbing at the annual DPS banquet on May 1, 1991. Over 100 people enjoyed the outstanding results of the hard work by Banquet Chair Patty Kline. The banquet was held in a private outdoor patio area at Lawry's California Center in Los Angeles. The cocktail hour started at 6:00 with people enjoying margaritas and salsa and chips while catching up with events in each other's lives: events involving peak bagging and otherwise. At this time, people also viewed the photos on display f or the photo contest and voted f or their favorites in two categories: historical and color. Dinner was a Mexican served buffet style. Patty presided over dinner welcoming the group and announcing the awards. Awards presented were:
Photo contest, HISTORICAL Category:
  First place in the Historical category went to Joe McCosker for a picture of George Novak guarding Chris Wicks camp. He won a $25 gift certificate from A-16. Barbara Lilly was awarded the second place prize for James Bobner's 1950 photo of her on Avawatz Peak. She received a copy of Barneman's Climbing Guide to Colorado's Fourteeners" donated by Bill Gray. Bob Cates received the third place award of a gift certificate from Pat's Ski & Sport Shop for his photo of Dick Akawie on Mecca Hill. Willard Dean was awarded a $25 gift certificate for his picture "On the Way to Cerro Gordo and Pinto".
Photo contest, COLOR Category:
  George Pfeiffer nabbed the first place prize in the Color category of a gift certificate from Pat's Ski & Sport with his photo of the dunes of Ibex Mntn. Wendy Reuss won the second place award with a picture of Sheephole. She received a daypack from the Sport Chalet to add to John's collection. Karen Boyarsky won third place with a picture of Halley's Comet. She will get a one year subscription to the SAGE (tax included!)
Special Awards were given to Anna Valkass for her design
  for the Banquet program featuring a desert scene with bighorns and pictographs. Also, Patty Kline received a special award for her outstanding work as banquet chair. Please patronize the businesses donating our prizes.
Terry Turner, the outgoing chair, presided over the beginning of the evening program. She reviewed highlights of the past season, congratulated new emblem holders and list finishers. This year Doug Mantle finally got some company in the DPS double list finishers circle from not one but two DPSers who accomplished this noteworthy feat during the past year: Barbara Reber and Ron Bartell.
