Scoops du Jour
  • Randy Bernard FINALLY learns Spanish. Randy raves about the Center of Languages and Latin American Studies in Ensenada. See Randy for further details.
  • On 11/10/90 DPSer Dave Jurasevich and 4 others summitted on 21,200 foot Mt. Mera in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal's Himalayan range. The spectacular view from the summit included Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Kangchenjunga, Ama Dablam and Cho Oyo along with a multitude of lesser peaks. The support team consisted of 28 members (3 Sherpas, 3 man kitchen crew and 22 porters) who all worked hard and in a professional manner to ultimately establish a high camp at 18,500 feet on the North glacier of the peak. Working through an Asian agent, the group is now in the preliminary planning stages for a Spring 1992 expedition to climb Shisha Pangma, an 8046 meter peak in Tibet and the 13th highest mountain in the world.
  • If you are ever lost or injured on a Saturday when she is on patrol wandering the trails of Mt. San Jacinto, Evelyn Chadwell, veteran volunteer ranger, will be there to give needed assistance.
  • Rumor has it that Doug Mantle will be triple list finishing the HPS and DPS on the same day. When and Where Doug???
  • Yosemite Renaissance VI will be exhibited in the Yosemite Valley Visitor Center from Feb 2 - May 5. One of our very own is a selected artist in the Photography section to be featured. Tom Ferguson will have on display a selenium toned silver print entitled "Bark". Good job Tom!
  • Walton Kabler and Carolina Gonzalez were united in marriage in L.A. 11/9/90. Walton reported that the couple wore matching L.L. Bean shirts for the ceremony and then later enjoyed a wedding dinner at Graziano's in Mojave and journeyed on to Marital Bliss, a small town near Death Valley. Walton (and bride) were later seen on Telescope Peak by Donn Cook. It was reported that Walton wore a big smile plus his new L.L. Bean shirt.
  • Ron Jones has been elected Chair of the Hundred Peaks Section for 1991. Congratulations Ron!
  • Speaking of Death Valley, it was reported that Igor Mamedalin and wife Suzanne were leading a desert peaks climb. The Mamedalin dog, also known as Comet, was one of the experienced participants. It seems the dog wandered off course and got into some 3rd class climbing (he must have been following Ron Young). Climbers were amazed to see that dogs, too, can experience sewing machine legs.
  • First anniversary greetings are extended to Igor and Suzanne Mamedalin. Congratulations!
