DESERT

When you are in the southern end
of Anza Borrego, a side trip worth the time is the Yuha Desert. This is just
south of Hwy 8, crossing at Ocotillo. The area was an ancient sea. The proof
rests with the beds of fossil oyster shells found there as well as other
bivalves. You can drive up in a standard car and look for them in the mud
hills. Not far from there is the only grove in the US of crucifiction thorns.
The grove is protected, it has a fence around it. Both places are shown on the
Imperial County Auto Club Map. And while you are there, you should not miss
another old landmark, Desert View Tower. Continue on Hwy 8 towards San Diego,
Just as you get to the top of the big grade, you should see the signs and the
tower. It has been there a long time, there are some great views, and tourist
items for sale. |
