Old Woman Mtn, DPS 3.10, DeLorme 85,86, Wild p74. Road will be closed about 2 mt short of Florence Mine. Possible alternate up Carbonate Gulch from the SW could be 2200', 3 ml if road is O.K.

Stepladder Mtn, DPS 3.12, DeLorme p86, Wild p113. Roads north from Turtle Mtn Road will be closed at Turtle Mtn Road. Current route will change from 7 mi, 1200' to 20 ml, 1500'. An alternate route from the NE appears probably viable: W from U.S. 95 on graded pipeline road, then S on the same track that we now take N from Turtle Mtn Road. Parking at about UTM 016315, the new route would be 9 mi, 1100'. This has not been explored, but flat terrain gives us a high degree of confidence that this will work! Other alternate routes are possible from the NW.
Palen Mtn, DPS 4.11, DeLorme p110, Wild p80. Road from W will be blocked at E side of N-S dirt road some 11 ml W of peak, changing W approach from 5 ml, 2300' to 22 mi, 3300. Approach from E, 2700', 6 ml, is unaffected & will be the only viable route.

Credits: Gene Olsen obtained the entire Wilderness Study Area map set, then drew in all the wilderness boundaries, then colored the wildernesses on a copy of the DeLorme map atlas. He loaned Dale Van Dalsem the map set and marked up DeLorme atlas. Dale then reviewed all pertinent maps and USGS topos and the DPS Road & Peak Guide and compiled the analysis above. This represents several man-days of work by Gene and a couple of man-days of work by Dale. Dale Van Dalsem is solely responsible for the above. -Dale, 1-10-90.
