January 2,1990
At October 29, there were 252 dues paying members and 33 subscribers. Through January 2, we have 5 new subscribers, 3 subscribers who become a members, 7 new members and 2 re-instated members. This results in 35 subscribers and 261 dues paying members. Of the 296 subscribers and members, 57 or 19% are paid through 1990.
CURRENT (?) STATUS OF THE GATE ON THE ROAD TO PORTER
On a climb of Porter Peak On 11 November 1989 we found that the locked gate is not necessarily opened on the weekends. Mines in the area are active, with explosive and other supplies left untended, so the miners have been locking the gate when they leave work on Friday night. We talked with one of the mine owners (Ted Robinson) who stated that a court order allowed the locked gate, that they were in process of discussions with the BLM about better provisions for access consistent with protection of their property, and that they didn't really wish to exclude hikers.
