HR-780/S-11 will cause the following changes in DPS peak hiking mileage, gain, and time: All current mileage's are roundtrip hiking miles from nearest commonly used 4WD roadhead. Feet of gain include major ups & downs. Future mileage's and feet of gain are based on assumptions detailed below. Times are Naismith's Rule plus 20%: Naismith: D/3 + G/2 = T, where D is distance in miles, G is thousands of feet of gain, and T is time in hours. Total increase in the 21 peaks affected is to add 77 miles, 11,600' gain, or about 38 hours of hiking. Ordered by added time.

Also: Palen Pass Road closure from the west adds 112 mi drive for Granite #2. Saline Corridor closing north of Upper Warm Spring changes Saline Mtn (VABM Blacktop)(Sometimes led; twice proposed for list addition) from 7 mi, 3600 gain to 22 miles, 5300', and changes western approach to Dry Mtn to 25 miles, 6900', and the hike to Red Rock Canyon east of elusive Marble Bath to 27 miles, 4800'. Details & assumptions follow:

HR780/S11 CHANGE DETAILS: Peaks are listed in the same order as in the summary above. After each peak there are 3 reference numbers: 1)"DPS" refers to the number on the DPS Peak List. Both 7.5' and 15' USGS topo maps are referenced on that list. 2) "De Lorme" refers to the page number in the "Southern California Atlas & Gazeteer", published by DeLorme Publishing, Freeport, Maine. 3) "Wild" refers to page number in the 120+ page series of 42" by 18" Ozalid process map set issued (by the BLM?) entitled "Wilderness Study Areas".
Avawatz Mtn, DPS 3.1, DeLorme p55, Wild p6: Road to Mormon Springs will be closed at the 1000' contour, 2.2 mi in from SR 127. Present route is 6 mi, 2500' 4WD from mine road, 11 mi, 4000' 2WD up canyon from Mormon Spring. Mormon Spring route will be 16 mi, 5200'. Alternate from .7 mi S. of Sheep Creek Spring: 16 mi, 4200', 9 hrs. Problem with alternate route is 9 mi hiking in Ft Irwin, vs 1.5 mi hiking in Ft Irwin w/present route. Alternate route minus present 4WD route is 10 mi, 1700'.
Maturango Pk, DPS 1.13, DeLorme p40,41, Wild p4. Bendire Canyon will be closed 3.0 miles in from pavement, 3.8 mi short of present roadhead at the dry waterfall.
Whipple Mtn, DPS 3.16, DeLorme p101, Wild p19. Road will be closed 1 mi N of aqueduct. Possible alternate route from War Eagle No 1 mine to the north will be explored. This would be 2700', 9 mi.
