FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND

Five Years Ago (Nov-Dec '82) in the DPS
Bill Bradley, on a private climb of Big Picacho, was first to report the now annual bighorn sheep hunting camp at the mouth of Canon Diablito near the Rancho Santa Clara. To my knowledge this Nov-Dec closure is still in effect but the peak can be climbed this period from the Western Plateau. Bob Greenawalt led a group of 11 on the 4th attempt, 1st successful for him, trip from Hunter Mtn to Cottonwood Springs & down Cottonwood Cyn in Death Valley. Maris Valkass failed the Desert Rat test at the campfire following his lead of Kingston. The next day he led a group of 6 to Avawatz. Helen Siemens recently passed away. She is survived by her husband, near list finisher, Abe. Norm Rohn became the 40th DPS list finisher having climbed South Guardian Angel in October. R.J. Secor, James Jones and Marty Chambliss joined the Section.

Bartell, Pospishil and Keating made a private climb of Baboquivari from the Nature Conservancy's Babo Ranch on the east side of the peak having been denied access from the west by the Papago tribe. Jon & Bernie Petitjean led an exploratory trip in the Needle's area climbing Battleship, Boundary Cone and exploring local mines. Fran Smith led his 9th annual frolic up Rabbit peak with a group of 24. On the way out 6 cars were stuck in the sand. Bill T and Jim Erb led 17 up Nopah and Smith Mtn. Mike Manchester and George Hubbard led the DPS exploratory hike of Sandy and Mike urged that Sandy be added to "the list". The next week Mike and Vi Grasso led a climb of Grapevine and Palmer. The campfire required a "Parental Guidance" approval of the 15 participants. Theresa Rutherford earned her emblem on Rabbit and Jerry Keating finished the DPS list on Cerro Pinacate and joined four others in completing the HPS, SPS and DPS lists.

"Awesome gastronomical acts" were carried out at the campfire of Ed Treacy's lead of Tin and Dry. Five inches of October rain washed out 20 miles of road in Death Valley. Flood waters of the Amargosa River created a shallow lake 10 miles long, 1-4 miles wide in the Valley. Ron Fracisco, Barbara Magnuson & Frank McDaniel earned their emblems in December climbs of peaks not listed in my records. Joe McCosker, Roy Ward, Phil Bruce, Susan Lynch, May Heishi and James Jones joined the Section. Norman Asa Clyde died December 23 and was buried in Tonopah Nevada.

Bob Bear led a group of 17 up Clark Mtn. On the drive out Bud Bingham knocked a hole in the gas tank of his car, lost all his gas but solved the problem by attaching a rubber hose to the gas line and running it up to a 5 gallon can of gas in the back seat of the car. Several weeks later Bob led 28 climbers, including Abe and Helen Siemens who flew into the Trona airport that morning, on a climb of Argus Peak. Bud Bingham, Harry Melts and Al Dageford led a successful climb of Old Dad in September (back in those days the climb of only one peak on a weekend was a frequent occurrence in both the DPS and the SPS). - RON
