Private Trip to Montgomery and Boundary - by Julie King
On the scheduled DPS trip to Dubois, Montgomery and Boundary on Sept.
12-13, 1987, it was decided that there was not enough time for everyone to
climb all three. We had to choose between them. I chose Dubois and was glad,
since we had a hearty, good group of seven. However, I still lacked Montgomery
and Boundary. With Frank Dobos' assist on the topo, Loren Lindgren and I went
to climb them on our own on the weekend of October 3, 1987. We drove in my 2WD
truck to the end of the road in Trail Canyon to an altitude of about 9000'.
From there we started Out at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 3.
The
canyon was beautiful in fall colors and green meadows along the spring; twice
we saw deer. While L.A. scorched, we had perfect weather, not too hot, not too
cold, with a few late afternoon clouds.
As Frank suggested, we climbed
to Trail Canyon Saddle and traversed half way up to 12,201 peak and then
straight up the rocks on the east side. There was Boundary in all it's glory!
We climbed Boundary and then Montgomery. On the way back from Montgomery we had
to reclimb Boundary (do we get credit for 2x?) and then left there at 5:15 p.m.
Contrary to what Frank suggested, that we return the same way, we dropped down
from the saddle between Boundary and 12,201 peak on scree for about a mile to
save time. We hurried to get back before dark and didn't quite make it. We had
to find our way across the creek thru the willows with our flashlights. We came
within a few yards of where the actual crossing was and got back to the truck
just after 7 p.m. |
