Picacho del Diablo Triumphs Again, by Andy Smatko (this trip
gave the name to Smatko's Camp); La Encantada Conquered on Second Try, by Ron
Jones; La Encantada Traverse by Bud Bingham are the articles I can not
republish. Even today Picacho del Diablo offers a real challenge to any
mountaineer. OCTOBER MEETING WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 2, 1974 The first DPS meeting for the current season will be held on Oct. 2 at the Youth Services Center, 7:30 pm. A SLIDE SHOW OF THE YEAR presentation on the Bristlecone Pines, "FOREST OF SUPERLATIVES", by Roy Tucker. Also an additional short on Fall Colors in tree leaves and how they develop will be shown. |

UPCOMING TRIPS |

Roy and Barbara Magnuson are leading this rather improbable combination of peaks because they will finish the DPS List with these two. Stepladder is near Needles and Indianhead is near Borrego Springs. Please contact the Magnusons if you wish to go on either or both climbs. 4 wheel drives are helpful on the road to Stepladder. |

THE DESERT MAGAZINE CLOSE-UPS | l95l | |||||
Louise Werner, who wrote the story of the attempted ascent of El Picacho del Diablo in Lower California for this issue of Desert Magazine, ranks among the best known of California's Sierra Club Mountaineers. With her husband, Niles, she has ascended most of California's high mountain peaks. Mrs. Werner does not rate herself as a professional writer. " The check you sent" she wrote to the Desert Magazine editor, "is the first money I ever earned by writing. But I don't intend to frame it." But she does have many interesting experiences in her mountain trips, and has promised to record more of them for Desert readers in the future. Louise also sent the article on Club De Exploraciones De Mexico to the DPS Newsletter. |
