DPS APRIL 1 ANNUAL BANQUET
Rudi's Italian inn Banquet room was filled with Baja California minded listeners when Dr. H. Homer Asehmann delivered his story about the history and ecology of our neighboring territory. He was most well received and the concesus of the entire crowd was an evening most delightfully spent. Another pleasure was the presence of Niles and Louise Werner, just recently returned from their long trip in the mainland of Mexico. Thanks go to Arkel Erb and Neko Colevins for their efforts to make this show of the year a reality.

Grand Canyon Bus Trip Memorial Day Weekend
Ed Ostrenga's idea of a repeat performance for the N-S Grand Canyon Traverse is taking shape with lots of interest displayed. At the time of this writing only six seats are left on the big 46 passenger bus. Don't let the lack of a reservation deter you. One may fly across the Canyon at very moderate rates. Check with Grand Canyon Airlines, Grand Canyon Airport, Ariz. for particulars. It is not uncommon to park one's car an the South Rim and fly across, walking back. Two years ago this bus trip was well received with enthusiasm still displayed. Check with Nancy Cochran GR6-1077 for bus travel. The plan is to leave Fri nit. and sleep on bus, arriving at North Rim Sat AM Sat nite's camp will be near Ribbon Falls. Sunday will take in Phantom Ranch and up to Indian Gardens for the night. Out Monday and home. A weekend at its fullest! Don't miss out on this wonderful hike. One time down there will call one back time after time. Neko Colevins and Jess Logan are assisting.

GORP Discussed -sneaked from 100 Pks Lookout
These are not initials but a coined word among knapsackers in genera1. Almost always there is bound to be one in a crowd that hasn't been exposed to this tasty nutrient, What it is may be a dilemma but recently Bruce Collier of the Hundred Pks Section came up with one answer. It is worth mentioning for trail-conscious people. Bruce advises to double the supply you think you might need since there are always "chowhounds" around to help you eat it. He recommends mixing the morsels in an airtight container and doling out only the amount thought necessary at a time. His recipe: Peanuts, raisons, sunflower seeds, dried apple bits, dried apricot bits, dried dates and figs, cashews, hazel nuts, M&Ms, Rice Chex, cloves for flavor, dried fruit cocktail, freeze dry ham, candy drops, banana flakes, corn kernels, freeze dry shrimp, roasted coconut chips, onionflakes, and a hint of garlic. Bruce is still hiking with great vigor so it can't be anything but good. Try it!

Trip Write-ups

Risco Pk(5150') Baja California Jan 3O-31 Gordon Macleod.
The 16 cars of the caravan with 48 Desert Peakers and guests successfully negotiated the Sand Trap, which lies a half mile from the Tijuana-Mexicali highway along the Laguna Salada Expressway, without losing a stroke. On the return trip, however, the hordes of Gringolandiers and their South-of-the-Border hosts, converging upon the TRAP Sunday evening, rediscovered some lost principles of sand mechanics including for example, the important axiom that the manpower equivalent of the conveyance's weight -properly applied, of course-can usually produce a satisfactory rectilinear motion.
