FROM YOUR CHAIRMAN -Bob Greenawalt
After three stints of duty in Palo Alto totaling almost ten months, I've just returned home again, this time to stay. DPS'ing by mail just isn't practical!
Sorry to have missed the Annual Banquet. From all reports it was a spectacular success. We must strive, to keep these events of such caliber. Already it is time to begin selection of a speaker for next year.
Recently heard from DPS member Howard Booth in Las Vegas who is currently outing chair of the newly formed Las Vegas Group of the Toiyabe Chapter.
He advises that their group would like to coordinate climbs with us when ours are in their area. I think this would be a fine idea. Many of our peaks are right in their back yard. Booth states the Club President Will Siri will be in Las Vegas just the days of May 1-2 Stirling & Hayford climbs and may be with us on these climbs. This would be a real thrill, getting to chat with an important member of our Club as well as one of the American Everest Expedition team. Hayford Pk has a special significance since it is located in the Desert Game Range, a part of which will come up for review as a potential addition to the National Wilderness Preservation System. Our members have also been given invitations for sleeping bag accommodations while in Las Vegas. Thank you, Howard...
I'm happy to see the interest in the Grand Canyon Bus Trip due for the forthcoming Memorial Day. Just two years ago we had the same traverse. With such enthusiasm, I still believe we should vote to have the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park as an "upside down" desert peak. This idea was kicked around several year ago but never ratified. Those of you wanting to start the discussion again, write a blurb.
