INFORMATION WANTED: Planning to visit Canyon do Cobre, Chihuahua, the Grand Canyon of Mexico. I'd appreciate any information on the area. Has anybody approached it from the west via Choix, Sinaloa or from Ciudad Obregon? Please contact HARRY MELTS, 3534 W. 112th St., Inglewood.

HARRY MELTS has a new office phone number: OS 6-O141, Ext 309 (days only).

Settled in Southern California again is veteran climber FRANK SANBORN. His address is 15344 Jackson St., Midway City. Phone: 897-9184. Prank plans to reactivate himself in section activities.

Peak bagger deluxe FREDE JENSEN has been enjoying his summer vacation climbing in Europe and North Africa. Recently he ascended Dje bel Toubkal (4165 meters), highest peak in the Atlas Range of Morocco. He suggests it for our Desert Peaks List, surrounded as it is by the Sahara.

GOOD NEWS! Upon protesting against the planned road construction project in Saguaro National Monument, Arizona, a project which would have dissected the monument and put a paved highway to the top of the highest peak in the area. HARRY MELTS received a reply from the National Park Service stating that the project has been dropped.

WE RECOMMEND THIS SCHEDULE !
Consult Angeles Chapter Schedule No. 173 for full particulars on these trips.
July 27-28: BLACK MTN. (9083') and BLANCO MTN. (11,278'). This scenic trip into the southern part of our highest desert range the majestic Whites -is being led by Walt Wheelock and Ruth Daly. Black Mtn., the southernmost peak in the range, will be climbed Saturday Standing well to the west of the main White massif, Black offers superb views down the Owens Valley trench and across the valley into the Palisade ramparts of the Sierra Nevada crest. The carcamp Saturday night will be among the bristlecones at Schulman Grove. Sunday Blanco Mtn, high on the arctic-like tundra of the main crest of the Whites will be leisurely ascended. Both of these peaks are moderately easy climbs. Those wishing to visit one of our most interesting desert peak areas meet at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 27th. at the junction of the White Mtn. Road on Westgard Pass 14 miles east of Big Pine.
Aug. 31-Sept. 1-2: ARC DOME (11,775'). Those who haven't hiked in the desert basin ranges of central Nevada will be pleasantly surprised if they join the section this year on our annual three day Labor Day weekend trip. Arc Dome (also known as Toiyabe Dome, high point of the lofty Toiyabe Range north of Tonopah, is the type of climb that justifies a long drive. Meeting Saturday noon at Carver's Cafe some 60 miles north of Tonopah on Nevada 84, the group will knapsack eight miles up the beautiful, precipitous, aspen-infested canyon of the Twin River South Fork. Unlike many desert peaks, there is plenty of water (the trail crosses the stream over 15 times). Sunday the group will make the long but easy ascent of Arc Dome and backpack out to the cars, allowing all day Monday for a leisurely drive home. Leaders are Andy Smatko and John Robinson- Andy has promised a moderate pace, so those interested in ascending one of our better desert peaks will find this trip to their liking.
Advance notice - Oct. 19-20: PROVIDENCE MTN. (7171'). This rocky, Pinyon-covered desert peak above Mitchell's Caverns State Park is being led as a bus trip by Tom and Trudie Hunt. Joining us on this trip will be the Riverside Chapter under Bob Bear. Bus reservations are $9.50, and are limited to 38 people. Send check to Trudie Hunt 19770 Lorencita Dr., Covina. The Hunts are now in Alaska, so those interested should wait until after Labor Day to send their remittance. Non-peak climbers are welcome; There is plenty of interest in the area.
