CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN by Harry Melts Starting my term for 1961 and writing my first disconnected jottings, I wish you a good desert now year and hope to see many of you on D.P.S. trips. Our business meeting is coming up at Club Headquarters Wednesday, February 22 at 7:30 pm. Mark this on your calendar! Among items on the agenda will be the voting on additions to our List of qualifying peaks. Peaks to be voted on will be Palen, Orocopia, Pinto, and Turtle. ALL have been scheduled and will be climbed prior to our meeting, so the membership has had an opportunity for first hand impressions. So come to the meeting and exercise your membership rights. At the end of a short business meeting we will have a slide show, so bring 10 slides in connection with a desert subjects. Two new DPS committees have been formed and the following have been appointed as chairmen for 1961. As chairman of the Publications Committee and editor of the newsletter is John Robinson. In John we have an experienced editor, he having initiated the successful Sierra Echo. His goal will be to make the Newsletter into a regularly appearing bimonthly publication, at least during the DPS climbing season (September to June). Perhaps some of our members can think of a better name for our newspaper. Suggest one and if it is adopted you will receive a life subscription to the Newsletter! Our second new committee is the Social Activities Committee, whose chairman is Trudie Hunt. I think no introduction here is needed! As in the past, the section Vice-Chairman is in charge of trip scheduling. Any suggestions or ideas concerning future trips should be forwarded to John. The summer schedule will be planned at the next meeting, so bring ideas for trips. ALL future trip Leaders will be asked to complete a trip report, giving driving, climbing route, weather, and number of participants data as well as other useful information and recommendations. These reports should prove useful in planning future trips. Please fill one out promptly if sent one. Hope to see you all at the February 22 meeting. FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK by John Robinson We are planning to make the Newsletter (or whatever else you decide to name it) into a regular bimonthly publication during the desert climbing months of September through June. In order to do this we need you help. Please forward trip write-ups and other news of interest to Desert Peakers |
