any policy approved by
the Angeles Chapter Executive Committee.
On the other side of the coin,
it's very important that trip leaders and participants follow the policy.
Everyone needs to realize that some people don't want to be on trips with
horses or dogs, and as David Eisenberg said, "Please do not impose upon the
goodwill of the leaders (or participants) by showing up on a regular hike with
dogs." The policy is there, please respect it. - Wynne Benti-Zdon.
For
the last few years I've often brought my dog to the car camp on Saturday night.
I've dealt with the problem of dogs being excluded from the hike itself by a)
leaving the dog in the truck during the hike, b) having someone not hiking look
after the dog, or c) the dog and I would bag the peak by a different route than
the main group. Thus I have an intense interest in the Safety Committee's view
on whether dogs are excluded from a car camp (unless mentioned in the original
announcement) and rang Bob Hicks on Sept 8. Bob says that as far as he is
concerned that unless stated otherwise the car camp is not part of the outing.
It appears to me that the safety committee concerns itself with the safety of
the hikes, not what people do in their time between the hikes. A guy with an
allergy and a guy with a dog should sort their differences out among
themselves. The Safety Committee has plenty of other issues to deal with

More on Ruby Dome Rescue by Al
Conrad The last issue of the SAGE discussed a DPS trip that got
involved with the rescue of Jerimiah, who broke his ankle on Ruby Dome. Al
Conrad sent the following letter to Karen Leonard regarding what happened
next.
Today I reconfirmed with Whitey that he encourages anyone
interested in the key, having him act as a contact person or just needing local
information to get in touch with him. Whitey reports that Jeremiah was
helicoptered out at 9 pm that night. (Recall we saw the |
chopper go when we were
having dinner at DiGrazio's The sheriff was able to obtain helicopter
evacuation services from the Failon Naval Air Station. (We drove by there on
July 4th.) The Navy team was quite skilled and professional. Whitey and
Jeremiah had concluded that even with the sheriffs litter they would not be
able to get out that night and would have had to stay in until morning. Whitey
already had a fire going by the time
the rescue team got there.
