Previous columns in this series have identified DPS officials, emblemees, list finishers and very early members. It now seems appropriate to recognize current members who have been DPSers for an appreciable time. Ron Bartell, the DPS member records chair, has a computer data base that stores dates of new membership; research into past memberships would be easy with this facility. But up until a few years ago the only source of membership data are lists that were used for mailings. To determine longevity of membership requires a name by name search of these lists. For some years, there are no lists in the archives and for some years the lists are heavily marked up and unclear. For these reasons, I decided to look back in ten year increments. The new 1994 membership list that is printed in this SAGE has 251 members. I compared the names on this list with the 1983 list (there is no 84 list in the archives) and found that 120 of our current members were members in 1983. Of these, 108 are emblemees and 47 are list finishers. Going back twenty years, to the 1974 list, I found 43 of our current members, all are emblemees. Fifteen of them served as DPS chairs and another ten were on management committees. Here they are:

Moving back thirty years, there are 14 current members who were members in 1964. Finally, seven of our 1994 members were members in 1954. These distinguished DPSers, listed by date of joining the DPS (as well as I can determine from the archives) are:

These people have served the DPS well. For example, Willard Dean was chair in 54 and his wife Marian was sec/treas in 55; they now live in Colorado. Fred Johnson lives in Berkeley but is actively climbing DPS and HPS peaks. Bob Greenawalt was chair in 65; he has been on recent DPS trips and finished the list last Nov. Other chairs were Gordon MacLeod in 69, Joe McCosker in 77 and Ron Jones in 79. Ron has just completed three good years as a editor of the SAGE. Some of these long time members dropped out of membership for a number of years but Willard Dean is the champion; he appears to have been on every membership list since the first one in the archives, that of 11-1-49 which contained 37 names.
