About 100 people attended the DPS
1994 Banquet at the TAIX restaurant. Several people, such at Tom Budlong, came
long distances in order to see Steve Smith's presentation descending the
canyons of the Inyos. Steve's talk on a local area within easy driving distance
of LA was well received by all. Many of us were wondering how to arrange for
Steve's technique of being dropped off by a helicopter at the top of huge hills
so we wouldn't have to worry about hiking uphill with all that gear. Fun
rappels and all that. Some people certainly have the life!
Door prizes
were as follows: Bryan Webb and Rita Schoenburn each won Camp 17 Days Packs
donated by Sport Chalet. Barbara Lilley got an A-16 gift certificate worth $25.
Janet Strom got a Patagonia Pile Jacket donated by Patagonia and Mario Gonzalez
won a Raven Map Relief of So Cal Deserts from the manufacturer. Janet decided
to come to the banquet at the last minute, buying her ticket on Sunday, and
received a prize worth more than the cost of her ticket! |
Mirna Roach got a nice round of
applause for putting together 58 outings during her tenure as outings chair. It
certainly seems like there were more outings than usual this last year.
When during the traditional "everyone stay standing who has ... "the point
came where only people who had finished the list twice were still standing a
moment of silence was observed for Dale van Dalsem who died last January.
Bill T Russell talked about his research into old time members of the
section. A summary of Bill's work is included elsewhere in this issue.
Patty Kline, the outgoing chair, used a donkey foot, complete with hair, to
symbolize the passing of the torch to Dan Richter, the incoming chair. |
