CONSERVATION UPDATE

Ward Valley . . .

The Ward Valley Nuclear Dump plan is in a "hold-your-breath" situation. As of this writing the BLM is strongly pushing to get the land transferred to the state before Clinton takes office. If this occurs, we will probably see a radioactive waste dump outside of Needles.

SOLUTIONS??

New solutions are being tested, such as dry cask storage for spent fuel at reactor sites. Another option called Monitored Retrievable Storage (MRS) is being heavily pushed where large amounts of money are being offered to native tribes and counties if they accept the construction of an MRS facility. The real solution is to stop producing more wastes now and reclassify the waste stream, as the Swedish government has, with a duel system based on both hazardous life and radioactive intensity.
