canyon, and remains in a S/SW direction. Road follows Cottonwood Wash and surface is alternatively hard packed sand and rocky, soft sand. Road ends 10.6 miles from mouth of canyon and 18.6 miles from Stovepipe Wells airstrip. Recommend 4WD. Camping allowed 8 miles from Stovepipe Wells airstrip.

8. Desolation Canyon
Open to any vehicle. Not marked.

9. Echo Canyon
The first 3.5 miles is passable to 2WD high clearance vehicles. A rocky spot prohibits low slung vehicles from going any further. The road beyond this has much loose gravel and exposed rocks and requires 4WD. Echo Canyon is passable to Lee's Camp by very small 4WD vehicles (CCJ-5 or smaller). But even the best drivers, have done some very significant vehicle damage going over the dry fall. There is a section east of the fall that is so tight that a small 4WD can barely get through. We do not recommend anyone going that way and we don't have a vehicle that could reach them if they needed help.

10. Galena Canyon
Passable to high clearance vehicles, watch for large rocks. This is a slow going, rock jarring road with lots of metal, nails etc. at mine camp area.

11. Gold Valley
From the turnoff of the Greenwater Valley road it is rough. The road drops into a fairly solid wash. It is not too bad until you get to the monument boundary. The road then becomes rougher as you climb to the crest.
2WD trucks can make it, as well as other high clearance vehicles although 4x4 is recommended.

12. Greenwater Valley Road
From the south end (Hwy 178) travelling north the road starts out fairly well. After a couple of miles you come to a deep, sandy wash. After about 7 miles it is not too bad, just bumpy. At ten miles is the turnoff to Gold Valley to the left. Travel north becomes smoother until you reach the Dantes View Road. It is in good shape. The park section is washboardy from Dantes View Road.

13. Grotto Canyon
Access is via CA19O, 4.5 miles west of junction of CA19O/Rt. 5, 2.3 miles east of Stovepipe Wells. Road is passable to high clearance, 2WD vehicles for 1 mile from Hwy 190 to wash. 4WD vehicles can continue 1 mile up the canyon in loose soft gravel. No camping. Designated day use area. Please stay on designated road. Driving off road is prohibited.

14. Hanaupah Canyon Road
2WD clearance recommended until road drops into wash, then 4WD. At mile 8.8 drivers should stay of f the left form (which is new). Last 1.6 miles 4WD because of loose gravel and boulders. Snow may be encountered at high elevations in winter.

15. Harry Wade Road
Heading south from Ashford Junction the first 2 miles are very washboardy. The rain causes ditches from the water flowing across the road.
The last part of the 2 miles is gravel making traction difficult and travel slow. The next couple of miles is better. After that the road gets washboard on the Confidence fan. There are a couple places of sand before
