A bill is up to attempt to equalize this situation, and the lobby efforts by the National Conference of Concessionaires is proving to be fierce.

As an additional note, some of our National Park concessions (Yosemite being one) have had strong bids by foreign interests, creating patriotic concern by many about our national parks and foreign profit making corporations.

WASTE

Much ado about waste is heard in Congress these days. A newly approved Senate bill would restrict the importation of the 15 million tons of trash across state lines. This bill omits the obviously vital issues of recycling and the reduction in initial waste production.

Nuclear waste and other hazardous or toxic waste problems are not about to go away and will need to be addressed. Loopholes need to be closed in current hazardous waste provisions.

One amendment strongly supported by the Sierra Club would give citizens the right to know about toxic chemicals used and emitted in their neighborhoods. (I think this is a big one!)

FINALE

There's going to be a lot of activity and excitement this year in the area of conservation and environmental protection. I will do my best to keep you well informed in these matters, especially relating to the desert.
