LETTER TO THE DESERT SAGE EDITOR 6/26/92

Dear Editor:

I read with interest the issue regarding Dale Van Dalsem testifying against the California Desert Protection Act and identifying his Sierra Club credentials. As a member of the DPS for 27 years and regular trip leader, I fully support Dale presenting his desert management views and identifying his DPS background. Dale has contributed immeasurably to the DPS for many years - both in leading trips and providing management direction. I believe it is very appropriate for him to provide his background when giving testimony to establish his level of expertise in desert matters. When less than half of our citizens even bother to vote in national elections, everyone who takes the time to constructively present their views is to be commended.

Personally, I believe we should be working to get more of our citizens out into "wildland areas" so they can better understand and benefit from the natural environment instead of ever more restrictions. When we add one billion people to the world's population every decade, wilderness designations are not going to solve our increasing environmental problems. As I recently read in an environmental report, "the best intentions in the world are not going to solve the accelerating degradation of our environment".

All seven of the proposed peaks for the DPS List get my support. Why have an arbitrary number of peaks? I have first hand knowledge of Sugarloaf, Mormon and Saline and they are great climbs. Of the ones proposed, Saline Peak would be my highest recommendation. Having climbed it following north and east approaches, I was very impressed with its panoramic views of the surrounding ranges, the beauty of its vast volcanic landscape and the desert experience of reaching the trailhead either through Saline Valley or Eureka Valley.

Thanks for the increased variety and quantity of desert information being published. I am enjoying the expanded coverage of DPS activities and related desert issues. I believe that your efforts are helping increase the visibility of the DPS and hopefully increase interest among desert enthusiasts about our group. It obviously takes a lot of effort and contributed time. Steve Smith
