The Desert Sage
MAY 1992     219

By the time that you read this, a new Management Committee will have been installed at the banquet on May 6 and a new DPS activity year will be underway. It has been a pleasure for our committee to have served the Section and on behalf of the Section, I thank the committee for a job well done. Some highlights of the year may be of interest.
  • A new and improved edition of the DPS Road and Peak Guide was written and published by Dave Jurasevich. It is very popular and many copies have been sold.
  • The Section sponsored 50 trips in the 12 month period 4 May 91 to 4 May 92. Champion leader with 8 trips was Larry Tidball. Igor Mamedalin led 5 and Ron Jones, Bill T Russell, George Toby and Dale Van Dalsem each led 4. Maris Valkass led 3, five people led 2 each and eight leaders led one trip. Many thanks to these hard working people and to those who were deputy leaders. And thanks to Outings Chair John McCully for putting it all together.
  • A list of peaks that are "recommended" by members for addition to the Peak List was established and will continue to be printed in the SAGE Leaders are urged to conduct trips to these peaks. The Management Committee will act to place them on the next ballot and will solicit informative pro and con statements for the SAGE.
  • The Bylaws were reviewed and edited for clarity. Our Secretary, Christine Mitchell, did much work on this project. A Bylaw change to delete the one year membership requirement for the emblem was defeated. In keeping with the Bylaws, the term "management committee" in the narrow sense, refers to the five elected members. The "extended" management committee includes the appointed people. Most of us do not make the distinction in conversation.
  • Conservation activities were energetically pushed by Chair Pat Acheson. The DPS cooperated with the Desert Committee of the Angeles Chapter on several work projects.
  • The price of the SAGE was changed from $9 to $10 to cover increased costs.
  • A new 27th edition of the Peak List dated September 1991 was published.
  • The membership meetings had record attendance. The programs were excellent, Many thanks to Bill Gray, Programs Chair for these programs and for managing the banquet.
  • The SAGE continues to be a winner, thank you Editor Ron Jones.
  • The DPS has excellent fiscal health. Fiscal and property affairs were admirably handled by Treasurer Wendy Ruess who also was assistant banquet manager.
  • A complete computer data base of all members since the birth of the Section is being formed by Member Records Chair, Ron Bartell and Secretary, Christine Mitchell. Christine did a great job of preparing minutes and acting as membership chief.
  • The DPS has 274 current members, an increase from a year ago. During the year, five people earned emblems to make a total of 491. Four people finished the list, giving us 75 list finishers. Ron Jones and Dale Van Dalsem finished the list twice to make five people with that accomplishment.
  • Patty Kline dutifully attended Chapter Council meetings and kept us well informed.
  • We are well started on a program of keeping records of the condition of peak registers and of encouraging people to carry containers and books to the summits. Dale Van Dalsem led that effort.
  • The Archivist/Historian, Bill T Russell, wrote two pieces for the SAGE. One listed all officers of the DPS since the beginning and the other identified the members through 1949. Work continued on putting the permanent records of the DPS into bound and organized form.
