We Get Letters
Dear Ron, May 27, 1991

As SAGE editor I would appreciate it if you would publish an obituary for Joan Hack, my long time hiking companion who died of cancer last week, She climbed 71 peaks on the SPS list, all but the Guardian Angels on the DPS list and was active in both sections in the late 60s and early 70's.

Sincerely,
Eric Schumacher

To answer Wes Shelberg's question regarding access to Trail Canyon via Aguereberry Point, the road first washed Out in 1975, Christmas time and was never re-opened although mining equipment remains at the head of the Canyon and can be seen from the ridge at Aguereberry Point. The upper road access is chained off but, in 1989, a Park Ranger indicated to me that there was some interest and a plan to re-open the road if funds became available. Having been one who tried to find that through route 3 days after the 1975 washout and having a friend lose a gas tank in that canyon, would like to make the trip again. Maybe someday!

Dear Ron and Leora,

It was great seeing you and all our other friends at the DPS Banquet last Wednesday, Betsy and I both like Lauries better than the old place even though they did run out of salads and desserts before we got to eat. They did improvise and brought in some cake from one of the other parties. Doesn't seem like there is much new blood coming into the DPS any more. I wonder how much the loss of the old style BMTC has impacted us and the other climbing sections.

Came across something that might be of interest to you for possible inclusion in the Desert Sage. I just received the May issue of the National Tombstone Epitaph and it features a number of articles about John Muir, the Sierra Club and a 1933 Sierra Club trip to Dear Valley and Hoover Dam that will be continued in June. You may be able to get permission to reproduce some of the articles in the Sage or other DPSers might like to order a copy or subscription of their own. The issue is May. 1991. Vol. XVIII. No. 5. The address is:

Tombstone Epitaph
Box 1880
Tombstone, AZ 85638.

There is no information on getting single issues though I know they sell them for $1.00 in Tombstone and should be available by mail with postage. An annual subscription is $12.50 postpaid.

Hope to see you on a trip soon,

Jon Lutz

Dear Ron, 7-9-91

The 4-day holiday weekend Dove Menkes & I spent on the Arizona Strip, climbing Trumbull, Logan, Delanbaugh, Wolf Hole Mtn. & Mt. Bangs.
Mount Bangs, high point of the Virgin Mtns. (8,000 ft +), is a tremendous desert peak. Summit block is large granite boulders & brush. View is outstanding-Mead to Zion. Saw Barbara Lilley's and Gordon McLeod's names in register.
Route goes from Cougar Springs. (see BLM map) Suggest you do it. Desert Peaks get no better.
