The Desert Sage
FEB/MAR 1991 212
From the Chair
Its springtime in the desert and we are unfortunately close to the end of another Desert Peaks climbing season. It's been a season of good climbing I'm happy to say. but all is not over yet. Spring is a lovely time in the desert and of course we have all of those high altitude peaks to look forward to.
On the front of this Issue of The Sage you found our annual DPS Ballot. We are fortunate to have some very qualified and experienced climbers running for our 1991 DPS Management Committee this year. Five members of our current committee running again, Bill Gray, Patty Kline, John McCully. Bill T. Russell and Bill Tryon (would any other Bill's like to run), as well as 3 first time Management Committee candidates, Pat Acheson, Wendy Ruess and Christine Mitchell. All qualified, all willing and ready to give freely and generously of their time to help manage and keep the spirit of the Desert Peaks Section going.
It will be difficult to pick just five. I urge all of our DPS membership to vote for the candidates of your choice.
I would like to talk a moment about a subject that won't be altogether popular. All kinds of tactics are used to get people to finally say that they will run. I must say that the 8 people who are running this year were not coerced, they said "yes" eagerly and without much "salesmanship" on the part of the nominating committee member.
But it was still a difficult task for those of us with the responsibility of doing the asking. I would like to think that It should be a little easier and that our membership would feel the desire to give something back to a section who has given them much in terms of fun trips and social occasions.
My intent here is not to try and make anyone feel guilty, but rather to ask that each member try to keep and open mind and think a little bit about what could and should be given back to the section. Yes, we have insurance problems and not all of us agree with the political positions of the Sierra Club, but don't all of us believe in DPS Peaks and our Section? All the section asks Is that each of it's members not decide to say no before they are asked to serve. Also my comments are not aimed at those people who were asked to run this year who said no. I know that every year the nominating committee has a very difficult time finding people to run.
Now to a more pleasant and fun subject - our annual DPS Banquet. This year's
