Scoops du Jour

by MARY & LEORA

YOUR SAGE NEEDS YOUR SCOOPS! Send in any news about your new 4WD, new baby, new husband, a friend's birthday or ??? News should be received before January 1 by Mary McMannes, 6955 Kester #305, Van Nuys 91405 or by L. Jones.

Frank Dobos is laid up from rock scrambling. He recently chipped a bone in his left wrist during an industrial accident. Get well quick Frank!

Betsy Lutz is enjoying her new found job in property accounting. Lucky Betsy commutes AGAINST the freeway traffic. Congratulations lady!

Bon vivant times were held by all at the prestigious list finishers of Doug Mantle (how could he lose with a name like that?), Bob Hicks (no, he's not from Arkansas), Gene Mauk (never managed a baseball team that I know of) and George Hubbard (Hubba Hubba). At Gene and George's grand and final ascent, the champagne flowed (and the tongues loosened). When the ladies proclaimed they would tell of their most memorable climbs with George in the Sierra, George hastened to dig for money (hush money). But being penniless, he handed out several credit cards instead. Mary Sue complained that she got the Mobil card and not the Gold Visa!

In December, Tom Ferguson will have more time to devote to his budding photography career. He has chosen to work only half time at his recording studio job in order to give him more time with photography.

Steve Smith is helping coordinate a volunteer project between the Friends of the Inyo Mtns Association and the BLM. They are inventorying historic trails and other resources, signing trails and monitoring use. Steve recently worked with 5 So Cal volunteers to map and sign a trail leading to the old Beveridge mining district and 7 miles down Beveridge Canyon into Saline Valley.

The saga of car trouble continues for Desert Rat Paul Freiman. Wanting a strong fast hike, Paul joined an HPS trip to Deer Mtn and others. After driving to the roadhead, changing into his boots and putting on his summit pack; he discovers that he has locked his keys in the ignition! You can't open a Subaru door with a coat hanger (he tried). So Paul tock a large rock and smashed the front windshield to recover his keys. It wasn't all bad luck though as he intended to replace his desert sand-pitted windshield the following Tuesday. Must have been a cold drive home Paul.

DPSer Bill T. Russell just returned from a desert trip to Egypt. Did you learn any new camel jokes Bill?

DPSer Jim Farkas is due to return to Los Angeles by mid-November from the Makalu base camp, Nepal, at 17,500'. In a recent postcard Jim writes, "Everything seems to be OK. It was a long walk in with rain and leaches. The French tell us there is lots of snow on the hill. As usual, no luck with local women and female trekkers."

DPSer Rich Henke will be leading a 34 day trek to Nepal in October 1991. The trip will include a 24 day trek to the base camp of Makalu, the 5th highest mountain in the world. Five days will be spent at high camp so that energetic people will have ample opportunity to explore the area around Makalu with views of Mt. Everest. For more info contact Rich.
