Road & Peak Guide Update
FEBRUARY 1989

1.13 MATURANGO PEAK: Total miles on dirt road should be 6.8 (NOT: 4 + 1.8 = 5.8)

1.14 ARGUS PEAK: CROW CANYON: Drive up 4-WD road (not on map) to 4200 ft. at about the word crow. GAIN: 2400 ft. ROUNDTRIP 4 miles, 4 1/2 hours.

2.12 & 2.13 GRAPEVINE & PALMER: DRIVE: About 13 miles should be 11.7 miles, this good dirt road is 0.4 miles past Springdale road. Zero odometer at pavement 6.9 miles enter Monument, at 11.1 road closed sign. continue on open road, 12.1 mile take right fork to Phinney Canyon, 2-WD park at 8.3 miles, 4-WD only to saddle at 8.3 mile. GRAPEVINE: Roundtrip: 4 hours

3.1 AVAWATZ MTN: Accumulated mileage from SR-127; 4.8 miles to a fork just south of Old Mormon Spring, go straight. Crux move is at 5.8 miles (should be about 1 mile farther west than shown on map). At 6.1 mile take left fork to avoid impassable road. At 6.9 take right fork staying to the far right next to canyon wall. At 8.2 miles left fork stay on ridge, 9.0 miles park, road makes sharp steep turn into canyon. Best driving time 1 hour. HIKE A: GAIN should be 1400 ft. Hours should be 3 1/2

3.14 TURTLE MTN: ROUND TRIP: Should be 5 hours.

4.7 BLACK BUTTE: When you are on are gas line road continue south to Bradshaw Rd. (This road, not shown on Auto Club Riverside County Map, runs east-west just a few feet north of the Chocolate Mountain Aerial Gunnery Range.) Turn left, go' East, on it 7.4 miles (.4 miles east of a cement slab floor some 20 yards south of Bradshaw Road).
From fork at 2.5 miles, the right, East, 4-WD road continues 2.0 miles, the park arrow should be a little more than 1/2 mile farther north than shown. ( 4.5 miles from Bradshaw Road) ROUND TRIP: Should be 3 hours.

4.8 CHUCKWALLA Peak: The faint jeep road is 1.7 miles long, 2-WD must stop at 1.4 miles, before mine gate. This road is .03 mile East of BM 1649 at intersection of Graham Pass Rd & Route of Butterfield.

4.10 GRANITE #2: ROUNDTRIP: Should be 7 hours.

6.11 SPIRIT Mtn: Park very close to tip of 'park arrow', hike northeast over the saddle with 4000' contour mark (this is east 1/4 mile of route shown) hike up one ridge south of route shown then through the "T" in Spirit to ridge top. True summit and register is 1/8 mile west of VABM 5639

8.7 KINO PEAK: ROUTE B, After turn west up class 3 route: the Unotch is the most left of the saddles seen, climbing time here is longer than it looks, about 1 1/2 hours from pass to U-notch.
