DPS Management Meeting Jan. 3, 1987 (unapproved)
In attendance: Randy Bernard, Gene Olsen, Karen Leonard, Bob Michael, Wynne Benti, Bill Faulkner, Steve Zotschke

Banquet/Programs
The management committee discussed the possibility of exploring a new location for the 1988 DPS Banquet. Bob Michael, programs, suggested The Panda Inn, A very nice Chinese restaurant in Glendale (three minutes from the Griffith Park Ranger's Auditorium). Also considered moving the banquet to Saturday night for the following reasons:
  1. To avoid the inconveniences of having to leave work early, changing clothes and dealing with Friday night traffic.
  2. Saturday night would give DPS members from areas not in close proximity to Los Angeles a better chance of attending the banquet.
  3. Start the banquet earlier, (party latter!)
Upon further examination, if was concluded that Saturday night wouldn't really conflict with weekend plans, since most people planning on a weekend trip would leave on Friday night.
Speaker or Music Everyone thought it would be much more festive to have music/dancing instead of a speaker. Bob Michael will explore the options. He will also research the cost of having the banquet at The Panda Inn. Bob also mentioned that he has lined up speakers well into April for the DPS meetings.

Desert Sage
Plans were discussed to recruit 20 new DPS members, to reach a goal of 200 members. One of the primary reasons for this is to enable the DPS to take advantage of the savings on bulk rate postage for the mailing of the DPS Sage. We need to meet the post office minimum requirement of 200 pieces. Presently, the DPS is paying 22 cents per 6 pages (2 slides for a total of l2 pages). The cost for bulk mailing is 6 cents per 12 pages (2 sides for a total of 24 pages). Double the number of pages for less than one-third of the cost! Methods of increasing membership were discussed:
  1. Encourage friends to join the DPS
  2. DS members will speak to BMTC students to encourage new membership
  3. Include BMTC Welcome in scheduled trip write-ups

Increasing DPS Emblem Requirements
Increasing the requirements for the DPS Emblem status was discussed. Presently, to attain emblem stems, a member must climb five of the seven emblem peaks and 15 listed peeks. Raising the number of listed peaks somewhere between 20 and 30 while retaining the same number of emblem peaks was suggested and met with mixed response. The idea will be put before DPS members for vote in spring of 1988, at the earliest.

Peak Guide
Ron Jones and Dale Van Dalsem are collecting old DPS Sages to extract trip write-ups from them to be used in the compilation of the Desert Peak Guide. This guide would be similar in format to the peak guide presently used by the Hundred Peaks Section. Distribution rights and potential income was discussed. Should all profits go to the section or should the authors be responsible for promotion, distribution, and therefore, receive all or percentage of the income brought in by the hook. Project financing and recipient of proceeds needs to be clarified.

Leader Meetings: to plan trips for the Angeles Chapter Schedule Many sections presently have meetings for leaders, prior to the Angeles Chapter Schedule deadline for submitting trip write-ups, specifically for the purpose of planning said scheduling trips for the upcoming schedule. It was suggested that the DPS start having meetings of this kind prior to each schedule deadline. The meeting would be an informal libation and hors d' oeuvres event held at a section leader's house. The first leader meeting, to plan the spring schedule, will be held on the first or third Wednesday of the month prior to the schedule deadline. Gene Olsen will announce the date for the next schedule (March-July 1988).

That's it! Wynne Benti 6/87
