Luminarias Restaurant, May 6, 1987 Karen Leonard, with the assistance of Julie Bernard, initiated the banquet festivities with the long awaited drawing of prizes. The crowd went wild with every announcement of a new winner. The prizes were: |

This year, the DPS conducted a photo contest. All submissions went to Karen Leonard, who with her panel of outside experts judged the four different categories: scenery, summits, relaxing and 'goofing off.' Karen created a mini-exhibition of the winning entries which could be viewed throughout the evening. Karen announced the winners of the each category (see Sage Article on photo contest for details). Briefly, first piece in the four categories went to: Pete Yamagata (Summits), Pete Yamagata (Relaxing), Ron Jones ('Goofing Off') and Wynne Benti (Scenery). Wynne Benti was awarded grand prize for best of show and received 'Palisades Point', an original unframed serigraph print by Edna Erspamer. Sherry Harsh, wearing the royal Dessert Peaks Section crown of gold and scarlet velvet, took to the podium and presented her final words as chairman 1986-87, summing up the events of the past year in desert climbing and conservation. Thanks ware extended to Betty McCosker for the beautiful banquet centerpieces, to Karen Leonard for her terrific efforts at coordinating an excellent banquet and to all who donated prizes to the raffle. Sherry than passed the crown to new chairman, Randy Bernard 1987-88, who took the podium. Randy discussed many desert related topics including goals for the upcoming year in outings end conservation related issues. Following the dinner and speeches, Professor Jay von Werlhof presented his slide show and theory on the giant desert drawings of prehistoric Indians in the deserts of Southern California. Imagery included dramatic aerial slides of the ancient figures. That's It! Wynne Benti |
