Farewell to a Friend | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
While Art Blauvelt and I were not very close friends, our paths in the Sierra Club crossed many times, and he was an important part of my mountaineering. Art was the leader of my first Sierra Club hike. We climbed Boundary and Montgomery. He introduced me to the DPS. We climbed in the Sierras, Lyell and Maclure. He encouraged me to take LTC, and he was my assistant on a provisional E lead. We made plans to climb Big Picacho, but we spent Thanksgiving Day digging the car out of sand. As a consolation we wanted to climb, at least, Jucumba, but we did not have a map. We asked one of the locals in the town of Jucumba who pointed out the peak. When we reached the summit in about 20 minutes, we could not find the register. We did climb Sombrero, our prize for the long weekend. On my provisional E lead of Piute Monument, after a boulder hopping route, when we reached our objective, Art told me that I have 20 minutes to get everyone up the rock before we have to turn back. All of us made it. For an "old" man with one lung Art was a strong climber. Beside Sierra peaks, he climbed Shasta and Rainier. He always wanted to add North Pal to his list, but the last time that he signed up for the trip, his illness prevented him from doing it. I think that his favorite peak was Little Picacho. I assisted him when he led a group of his BMTC students and DPS'ers. He enjoyed showing them how much fun and easy the climb was. He was also a good leader. Art wanted to come to the February DPS meeting, but again the illness stopped him. I miss him, and I know that all of us who knew him do. |
