| CHAIRMAN'S
CORNER |
MARCH 1987 |
|
Well, this is an exciting
time of year for the Desert Peakers - we're still in the height of our climbing
season, the Banquet is fast approaching, and as this goes to press, your
hard-working management committee is busily putting together the ballot for
next year's management slate. Randy's preliminary list shows a number of good
trips have gone into the Schedule for the summer and early fall season, proving
once again that our stalwart and dedicated Leaders are not constrained by the
seasons; we'll make this a year-round Section yet! Be sure to get your ticket
early for the social highlight of the DPS year- our annual Banquet. Featuring
socializing, dining, a fascinating program on giant prehistoric Indian
geoglyphs, and your best chance to see your fellow climbers in their "real
world" attire. Special thanks to Karen Leonard, who in addition to her
regular duties of putting together our programs and the Banquet, has taken on
the yeoman's task of re-writing the DPS By-Laws,- incorporating all the changes
that have been voted on and approved in years past. We'll have 'em done and
approved before the summer - Thanks, Karen!
(And remember,
your dues are due!)
Happy hiking! |

| It
is with great sadness that we report the loss of our good friend, Desert Peaks
Leader, past Chairman and fellow mountaineer Art Blauvelt. All of us who were
privileged to know this fine man will miss him sorely; his untiring dedication
to the Sierra Club, and to the BMTC; his willingness to lead, and to teach, and
to share his knowledge of the deserts, the mountains, and mountaineering
skills. We remember his fierce determination to reach the summits, and also his
kindness to novice climbers; we recall his inveterate bird-watching, and, his
ubiquitous puns. |
