PALEN AND BIG MARIA JAN 19-20 1985 MARIS VALKASS & RON JONES

This trip had the largest number of people than on any trip that I have been. With 44 people we rivaled Gene Olson's trip last year with 56. I did turn couple of people away who phoned me, but I should have let them come. My apologies, and please come next time.

We met at 7:30 at Inca (NW of Blythe). From there we drove W on Arlington Mine Road, past Black Jack tunnel, across the wash (small valley) to the first road turning right. Drove up that road for about 1.5 mi, parked, and headed for Palen. We started at 9:30, and the last person arrived on top by 1:30. Everyone made it. We returned to the cars by 4 and then drove a short distance back to the wash with the beautiful ironwood trees where we set up camp.

We learned a financially painful lesson. Someone lost their only set of car keys. Sunday morning they had to go into Blythe, and I understand that $100 later they were able to drive the car home.

We had a few people who were on their first DPS trip, or had only been on one or two before. Neil Schwarz climbed his first peak and said that he will come back as soon as he recuperates. Richards Lejnieks, a fellow Latvian, was on his second DPS trip. He is enrolled in BMTC, and said that we will see a lot of him. Esi Sveicinats! (Latvian saying)

DPS can look forward to three new members. Gail Hanna, Barbara Raab, and Paul Freiman from San Diego area liked it so well that they decided to sign up. They qualified on Big Maria. Have we received their money yet?

Another potential member is Tanya Mamedalin, Igor's daughter. Keep going Tanya!

Bill Hauser set the record for distance traveled. He joined us all the way from San Jose. I hope that we see him more than once a year.

There were a few others with whom I did not have a chance to visit. Please join us again soon so we can know you: Bill Faulkner, Tom Neely, Tom Moumblow, Jeff Wilson, Robert Wyka, Kurt VanDerhorst, and Bill DeJager.

We had a fine campfire Saturday night. This was a low calorie trip, so we only shared hors doeuvres.
