Five Years Ago in the DPS
New DPS members this period included Greg Vernon, Bill and Rita Gray, Lucy and Debbie Woodward. Dick Banner and Gene Gail led 19 persons on a climb of Kofa via the then relatively new short 1-3/4 mile route. Gene Gail and Dick Akawie led 29 climbers to Avawatz Pk from Old Mormon Spring on Saturday, then 14 "real climbers" on a climb of North Kingston Sunday. Mike Manchester took a group of 28 up Sombrero and Jacumba Peaks. Cuno Ranschau gave a splendid rendition of Rindercella on Dick Banner and Fran Smith's climb of Whipple and Chemehuevi.
Ten Years Ago
Roy Ward led a 1973 New Year's weekend climb to Charleston, Mummy and Marble with 6 participants.' Paul Lipsohn misled a group of 31 people on his notorious climb of Pico Fiasco. Eight persons went on to climb the real Pico Risco. Upon the return to camp in Guadalupe Canon it was discovered that May Heishi had lost the keys to Dave Gladstone's car. John "Fingers" Backus picked the trunk lock but the double-tumbler ignition lock proved a match for, him. Ron Fracisco then dismantled the lock from the steering column. New DPS members include Barbara Reber, Bill Maslow and Wm. Russell. Doug Mantle and May Heishi got their emblems on Telescope Peak in January and 10 year old Laura Jones earned her emblem in February.
Twenty Years Ago
The waters of Lake Powell began to rise in January 1963, eventually to flood and cover the beautiful side canyons in the Glen Canyon Gorge. John Robinson and Bob Greenawalt led 17 on a climb of Pinto Peak. John and Harry Melts led 18 on the first DPS climb of Whipple since 1953. Gordon MacLeod and Frank Meyers joined the DPS this period while Gene Gail and Russ Mohn earned their emblems.
