RE: POTENTIAL LIST ADDITIONS

Dear Editor:
I am embarrassed. I have read the pros and cons regarding the potential list additions. Anytime a "con" argument ends with "shucks, but I really think it is a worthwhile peak after all, and we probably ought to vote for it", the membership had better beware.

These are two peaks which have been considered by mountaineering committees and management committees, and membership for that matter, in the past, and always rejected.

Just for one example, I note a memo from the mountaineering committee to the management committee, dated December 19, 1979, regarding Saline: "Quality of the peak not sufficient to compensate for the difficult access".

Perhaps there has been an earthquake and landscaping in the interim.

These are two crummy peaks a long way from home. As to Saline, it does not go particularly well with anything except perhaps Dry, which already goes very nicely with Tin. I don't buy the argument that we need Virgin to go with Moapa, either. There are plenty of Southern Nevada peaks to go with Moapa. The last time we felt we had to add one peak to go with another was Sandy and any of us who have slogged up that totally colorless standard route regrets the addition without exception.

There are plenty of worthwhile peaks to be explored and added to the DPS list. Let's check them out rather than re-hashing old, tired, defeated proposals.

I look forward to receiving your thoughts on this subject.
Butte
Very truly yours,
