Five Years Ago in the DPS

The annual banquet in 1977 was held at Luminarias with John and Ruth Mendenhall presenting the program. Mike Manchester was introduced as the new Chairman; Gordon McLeod, Vice Chair; Ron Jones, Secy-Treas; Duane McRuer, Council Rep; Harry Brumer, Conservation and Anna Lou Pinson, Desert Stream Crosser. During May-June-July Al Campbell and Barbara Lilly became list finishers #26 and #27; Bob Thompson emblem holder #355; Bob Pohl and Kathy Leach joined the Section. Gene Gail and Dick Akawie led 20 on an exploratory of Stewart & Brown. Bill T. and John Hellman led 22 on Hayford and 8 to Sterling in a snowstorm, McCosker and Nelson led 16 on Patterson & Glass.

Ten Years Ago.

Les Stockton was inducted as the new Chairman; Paul Lipsohn Vice Chair; Ed Treacy, Secty-Treas; Howard Stevens, Program; Ben Romero, Conservation at the 1972 annual meeting held at Rudi's Italian Inn (a long time Section favorite) where the prime rib dinner cost $4.75. Neil Boykin spoke on Glen Canyon. Erik Schumaker became a list finisher on Pescadores; Milosh Benesh, Fran Smith and Bruce Jones earned their emblems. Paul Kluth, Doug Mantle and Beth Henry were new members. Les Stockton and Bob Herlihy led 24 on Charleston & Mummy. Later, on July 15, l972, Bob Herlihy was struck by lightning and killed in the Sierra. Sid Davis, later in the month, dedicated his 250th climb of San Jacinto the memory of Bob.

Twenty Years Ago

Hayford Peak was led as an exploratory by Polly Connable, Harry & Siina Melts and then was voted a new addition to the list along with Cerro Pinacate, making 56 peaks on the DPS List in 1962. John Robinson was elected Chairman; Walt Wheelock, Vice Chair; Bob Greenawalt, Secy-Treas; Harry Melts and Parker Severson, Members at Large on an earlier ballot. There were 77 regular DPS members and Dan Thrapp an honorary member. Joe McCosker, Abe Siemans and Ron Jones became members during this time. Andy Smatko, Tom Ross and Phil Clayton were snowed out on Andy's 3rd try on Toiyabe Dome. (He made the top in 1963 to become the first DPS list finisher).
