Mike then turned the program back to Chairperson Barbara Reber who gave a parting speech for herself and the 1980 Management Committee. We were bouyed along on her reminiscences and felt nostalgia as she gave the responsibility of her office over to new Chairperson, Vi Grasso.

Vi fit right into her regal role as she donned the red velvet crown, symbol of DPS leadership. She assured members that they could relax and concentrate on climbing peaks because the panel of officers would be tending to business and would hopefully match the excellent performance of the outgoing panel.

Besides Vi, the new panel consists of:

     Vice Chairperson - Ron Bartell
     Secretary-Treasurer - Mary Sue Miller
     Program Chairperson - Jon Lutz
     Council Representative - Art Blauvelt

Bob Cates announced that the Francis Farhquar award was given to Sam Fink.

Barbara then introduced the speaker, author and lecturer, Remi Nadeau. His subject was "Ghost Towns of California." Remi led us down the nostalgia path with slides of ghost towns familiar to and beloved of DPS'ers. He also showed us slides of ghost towns in other states as he expressed the fact that California has no corner on ghost towns. We appreciated his comment that the aura of ghost towns brings us a philosophy of enjoying them. We were saddened by slides of ghost towns like Ballarat which have been vandalized since the time of the slides of them taken by Remi early in his lifelong love affair with California ghost towns and California history.
