A BORDERLINE EXPERIENCE or SOUSE OF THE BORDER JUNE 2,3

Well, it was supposed to be a great weekend and we hit it on the nose. A scramble of people, 15 in all, met where hwy 3A meets Middle Creek Road. It's a bunch of miles up NCR and then an unpretentious road branches left. The pretentious thing about it is that it pretends to want to do in your gas tank and any other vulnerable spots, but if you are very careful you won't let it. Everyone with nerve and tried it was successful-both ways- mostly vulnerable American types.
Well, this was a busy 10000' gain weekend and so everyone was In great shape, right? Ah, not so!! One showed his true colors early of not having done a thing in four years and so had to be nursed to camp ---but no farther!
In the pm all but two headed up slope for Montgomery, some rock, some snow, some rubble, some class 3 even--thank goodness for sonic decent stuff. Finally on top Doug ascertained this to be Brian Stone's emblem peak (about time), after delineating the peaks he had climbed-'gratS'!
We left soonly for the Nev. Boundary and its associated peak. This gave Cathy Robinson and others another state high point. Down the lovely scree, down and up steep canyon walls and eventually everyone to camp by 8:00. That leaves plenty of daylite to cook dindin. Campfire, and assorted sordid jokes round out the day.
Five thirty am is like a pigs tail--it's twirly, but that's when I blew the whistle and Doug woke up 10 minutes later to announce the time, which may account for not everyone being ready on time but, by 6:30 we were able to collect enuf to make a summit attempt on Dubois (10 bod's).
Around the hill, thru gullies, up slopes- (puff-puff), up snow (puff-puff), lots of rest stops (puff-puff), along gentle ridges (puff-puff), rest on summit (puff-puff). Good time- 3 hrs. Nice weather. This leaves Cuno with only one to go.
An attempt was made to name the range to the west. Some thought it to be the Panamints, others the San Gabriels ("Isn't that Baldy"?). And still others thought perhaps the Sierras. Now to camp for lunch-with some glissading. Pack out to cars and WATCH OUT FOR THOSE ROCKS--WHAT YA TRYIN' TO DO DESTROY MY CAR???!!!     cuno/doug
