agreed by all participants that this 5,450 foot gain, 12 mile round trip climb from a new road head area was most certainly suitable for recommendation as a peak in the DPS list.

A good time was had by all and all are invited to the Third Annual Argus Peak Climb and desert deer barbecue in the spring of 1980. As Adrienne wrote:

       Bray donkey, bray
Ron Jones is coming this way
Sound the warning loud and true
Or you'll end up in the barbecue!

SENTINEL PEAK - PRIVATE TRIP JUNE 24

The road up Surprise Canyon is in good shape now and should remain that way until the first heavy rains of winter. Volkswagen vans and pickup trucks can negotiate the road to the ruins of the smelter and the mercantile store at 6,300 feet with no real problem. A chain across the road stops one at that point. Adrienne Knute and I hiked up the trail in Frenchman's Canyon to Panamint Pass at 8,070 feet. Enroute we passed the rock foundations of many old cabins and mining structures. Panamint City in 1873 boasted a population of up to 10,000 miners, drifters and gamblers.

The route from Panamint Pass to Sentinel Peak follows the ridge, dropping down on the east side when necessary, to easier slopes just below the summit. Deer were seen but no evidence of bighorns. We descended by way of the usual climbing route following the obvious ridge to the northwest until Marvel Canyon was reached. Marvel Canyon was followed down to an old mine road. This road leads west to the Hemlock Mine, best of the Panamint City silver-copper mines. Once on the road we turned north instead, passing a number of diggings with the famous Panamint City blue ore much in evidence. The road continues north directly to the Wyoming Mine and beyond, past the remains of the old powder storage in Magazine Canyon and exits into Surprise Canyon just above Panamint City.
