DESERT PEAKS SECTION NEWSLETTER #14

August 3, 1951

Dear Desert Peaker:

Well, the SECOND TRIENNIAL BANQUET came off with even more of a bang than was indicated in advance. The number of those attending the big doings at the Rainbow Angling Club, on June 24th, was almost exactly equal to the number on our membership roster - 60. In case anyone thought the tariff a bit steep, the DPS at least didn't fatten its Treasury on the deal. We trust no one feels it inappropriate to charge the $2.87 deficit against the Section funds. Our little gathering drew celebrants from as far away as Sacramento (Alden Hilton) and China Lake (Polly and Harry Connable.)

Here is the picture of a perfect design for a party as created by H. Greenhood & Co. A balmy evening in June, a big room in a well-appointed angling club overlooking its private fishing lake, with a lot of congenial friends rubbing elbows. A choice of liquid appetizers to start things off, then a buffet-style dinner with no limit on the returns for more delectables. Finally, a variety of diversion, both organized and self-provided.

Those who attended the party are surely appreciative of the efforts of the entertainers and the banquet committee. Mr. Edwards was a huge success with his Indian legends of the Havasupai and the Southwest, related in his inimitable, informal way. Marie Smith and her Sage Brush Singers helped balance a well-rounded program with a variety of songs, including solos, chorus numbers and group singing. Most novel diversion of the evening was a game especially devised for the occasion, involving identification of our desert peaks from their pictures. It was all the product of a lot of planning and hard work by the banquet committee. Henry, Alda, John, Irene, Marie, and Rosemarie - we all thank you for your jobs well done!

This is one Newsletter - the only one, I hope - which is notable for its scarcity of material on trips. The San Diego group had a rugged trip to WHITE MOUNTAIN PEAK on June 16th. In spite of a snow storm and much mountain sickness, six of the 10 climbers made the top. When you have to start from McAfee Meadows that peak is surely no push-over. Too bad the unfavorable weather cheated them of the impressive views of and from the main summit. Also on the week-end of June 16-17 was a scheduled DPS trip to ALAMO MTN. in the Santa Barbara Range led by Bill Crookston. The original plans to make this a back pack trip had to be changed at the last minute when dry weather forced early closing of the National Forest, in turn causing restriction on the trip. Thus instead of hiking part way in on Saturday, Bill had to load the long trip to the top of Alamo and back all on Sunday.

Quite a group of SAN DIEGO CLIMBERS have recently completed climbs qualifying them for membership in the DPS or for the Section emblem. On the White Mtn. trip in June, Barbara Lilley and Gene Vinson qualified to wear the emblem, while Mary Roselli and Gene Ramstodd picked up their sixth required peaks. Previously, Frances Pierson and Jerry Zagorites had sent in lists of their respective six qualifying peaks. We are all mighty pleased with the enthusiastic interest of the San Diegans in our Desert Peaks. May it serve as a stimulus to us actual and prospective members in the Southern California Chapter to be as active as they.
