IS THIS OUR PROBLEM?

"There is a growing feeling among Americans that they really have no control over their destiny. Pollution is growing, population is growing, wildlife is declining, crime rampant, the economy shot. It just makes you want to throw up your hands and go have some beer, go fishing, have a little fun with what's left. I don't relish the battle anymore, I don't want to think about Kaiparowits. I've become more introverted. I want to rope off my living space and just be left alone. Those who have an economic stake in environmental matters never get tired, their interest never flags. But those who work on their own time find the fight gets old."
"You find that these environmental issue begin to dominate your life and yet you have nothing to show for it except that you name is a dirty word to a lot of people. I think that people are just tired of hearing about all the environmental problems. It depresses them because it almost always in bad news. After all, conservation is just minimizing losses. There are no gains. People today have so many desperate personal problems that it is all that they can do just to bet by on a day-to-day basis. They can't, they don't want to cope with any more problems. So they just put the environmental matters out of their mind." -Neil Carmony, Tucson (describing why people in Tucson, which was a few years ago a center of environmental activity, are now apathetic.) Fort Piute Cleanup
MEMBERS of the Sierra Club and the Jet Propulsion Lab Hiking Club, in the photo at right, conducted a clean-up recently in the area of the ruins of Fort Piute in San Bernardino County. They gathered more than two truck loads of trash and debris, which was hauled by Desert Ranger Randy Legler to the Needles dump. Those in the photo above, back row, from left: Pat Nelson, Paul Nelson, Donna Luzius and Mabel Barnes, all of the Sierra Club; Jim Miller, not affiliated; and Paul Parsons, JPLHC; front row, left to right: Linda Parsons, JPLHC; and Elliott Snyder, Sierra Club, who led the group. Those participating but not in the photo were Ike Eastvold and Larry Silver, both Sierra Club members.

Good Going gang! Let's get some more out next time!
