Dear Desert Friends,

This is it! The opening of the California Section of the new National Scenic Desert Trail. that stretches from the Nevada border to the Mexican border.

Starting April 2, 1976, Betty J. Tucker, Desert Trail Association director and California Section Trail Coordinator, will start the 511 mile hike at Nevada. The proposed trail crosses desert lands perhaps never before walked, It will touch upon beautiful cactus stands, hot springs, lava beds, petroglyphs, bad lands and spring flowers. The trail will go through Death Valley National Monument, Joshua Tree National Monument and Anza-Borrego State Park. Miles and miles of hi story will be covered including ghost towns, and lengths of the Tonopah & Tidewater Railroad bed.

For this hike over 30 food and water caches have been put out. Forty-two topo maps have been marked and 15 strips of moleskin cut to size. It is a tremendous undertaking for the lone hiker. Anyone supplying their own equipment will be welcomed for any segment of the hike. Just show up--no pre-arrangement signals required. This is a trail for desert lovers, come along and open it in grand style.

Sincerely, THE DESERT TRAIL ASSOCIATION
