EDITOR'S CORNER    (MANDATORY RULES FOR THE CLIMBING SECTIONS)  B. REBER

The Executive Committee of the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club should take a long look at the basic tenets of the Sierra Club, to explore, to enjoy and preserve.
The current bent seems to be a myriad of rules, regulations and mandatory policies and empire building, which the ordinary Sierra Club member is not permitted to vote for or against.
I quote from the Schedule, "the effectiveness of the Sierra Club in achieving its basic purpose depends upon a continually growing membership of persons who are interested in advancing these purposes." In a society fraught with rules and regulations who needs to join an organization that copies our society.
My reason for joining the Sierra Club was to explore, enjoy and preserve. Currently we have the Safety Committee with rules and regulations, then we have the rating of leaders, then COMET or trip ratings and now MANDATORY car pooling, MANDATORY reservations for all overnight trips and no trip information in the schedule. This should be enough to make John Muir turn over in his grave. Who is going to enforce all these mandatory rules? As an individual I object to being subjected to rules without a vote. I believe the job of the Executive Committee is in the direction of suggestion not in ruling and empire building.
Most of us climb and join Sierra Club trips to enjoy ourselves in the outdoors, enjoy fellowship, conquer mountains and to get away from the pressures of society. Now Big Brother is following us to the mountains.
Currently the Angeles Chapter is suffering from the affliction of many chiefs and no Indians with a vote. Soon it will be suffering from lack of interest, lack of indians and mucho chiefs with paper empires.
