Safety
must be foremost in our recreation-oriented minds. Our desert peaking,
fortunately, has not been controlled at any level, although at least at
present, the wilderness permits in the Sierra and local mountains have been
granted without restriction areawise. The SPS is restricted to a maximum of 25
people per trip, so all their climbs must necessarily be restricted. Inasmuch
as the entire desert is a campground and a trail, we may not be controlled on
foot, but off-road vehicles can be totally destructive. So care in this phase
of our activity should be exercised in vehicle turnaround,
etc.

I'll be
looking forward to a good year, both instructive and enjoyable. No less an
authority than Everest pioneer, Mallory (Wedberq, also), has indicated he
climbed strictly for fun, and if he can, I think we can too (if the temperature
will drop below 100°). The emblem is still, 15 peaks (5 required). Our
first program in October will be Ken McNutt's exceptional presentation of rock
climbing, "Venture and Gear." - We'll see you there.

MOUNTAIN
RECORDS
|
At the October
meeting, the Mountain Records Committee will present a list of peaks for
addition to or deletion from the peaks list. We will publish a short fact sheet
on each peak prior to this meeting.
We welcome suggestions from the
membership for this purpose. Please send any suggestions to any of the
committee members before September 10.
