This combination of peaks provides and excellent spring snow climb. While Charleston is about 13 miles on the standard route, it is indeed a beautiful and satisfying journey in such a heavy-snow-year.
The Mummy event on Sunday also affords an opportunity for early home regression despite the relatively long drive. Also such combination makes possible for a Sat nite dinner (and late show if desired) in a nearby sin city.

More thoughts on Avawatz-    (sneaked in)         -Steve Smith

The several mine buildings at Sheep Creek Springs make a good starting point for Avawatz if no VW is available. Ours took us a mile past the Spring. This is in a dry stream bed but must have once been a road since an old International truck is parked several miles further uphill. By following the main dry stream bed for about 5 miles, one is led almost directly to the Peak. A mile from the summit the canyon narrows and a little climbing is necessary. A pipeline runs for several miles thru the streambed.
Do not attempt a south ascent. Bill Banks will also attest to that. Bill and I were primed and attempted this route at the Silver Lake Road-Camp Irwin stop boundary. We walked eight miles across the desert floor, always heading north for the high point. Unfortunately after two false summits, the high point attained was two miles and a large valley south of Avawatz Peak! Hard Lines!!
