DPS Newsletter
From Our Chairman- Bud Bingham
Outstanding is a mild word for it! Our recent scheduled trip over Thanksgiving weekend to Cerro de la Encantada wins hands down as one of the most successful climbs in DPS history. The leaders John Robinson and Gene Gail did a most admirable task conducting the fairly strenuous trek into the Sierra San Pedro Martir. A record was set for the number of people reaching the summit on the same day, but more important all participants made it back to the cars safely!
Cooperation among the participants was extremely good. Several people voluntarily supported the leaders whenever special obstacles were met in Canon Diablo or on the climb the third day. All this helped move the group more efficiently, especially those people with marginal rock climbing ability or condition. Of special note, a DPS guest and newcomer club member proved very able with his technology in rock work and was a major contributor to the success of the event. His name is Ed Smith, a real asset to our group.
Fortunately most climbers were in fairly good condition and sunny weather was ours for the four days. We owe many thanks to the leaders and their help for such a successful challenge.

GLEN CANYON
The Glen Canyon film, produced by the Sierra Club, will be shown in color on TV Channel 28 Tuesday eve, Jan 3. The film is derived from a slide presentation by Phil Pennington of the Sierra Club. It effectively explores the beauty of the side canyons and the unequalled river experience. Tell your friends not to miss this program, since it compares the old canyon to what it now and will help in our Save Grand Canyon fight.
