DPS Newsletter
From Our Chairman- Bud Bingham
With the new DPS season underway, the first scheduled meeting was held recently at Silver Lake Playground. The facilities are quite an improvement over those used last season!
"Bring Your Own Slides of Past Vacations" was the planned program. Frede Jensen provided a beautiful selection of his climbing ventures on rock, ice, and snow in Alberta and British Columbia. Route interest was much in evidence. Arkel Erb surprised us with a preview of his Peruvian ascents in the Andes, taking in grand peaks of 20,000 feet or more. You will not want to miss the program when his slides are organized for a showing! Parker Severson gave slides skillfully taken in Havasu Canyon as spring abounded with the redbud in bloom. Unusual views were shown of the three major waterfalls with their spectacular travetine aprons followed by a few Swiss scenes.
During the meeting, Gordon MacLeod made several new peak recommendations with commentary based on recent personal observations as to their merits for possible addition to our current list, being: Kino Peak, Mt Ajo, and Santa Rosa Peaks all in the area of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in Southern Arizona. Of course, altering the maintained list is always a controversial subject and this issue could appear on the forthcoming March ballot to assure a quorum.
Please Note:
The scheduled Toro Pk-Clark Lake Traverse via Rockhouse Canyon Nov 5-6 may have its problems unless support is obtained from a car camping group who can do the car shuttle. A recent scouting trip shows that the only pitfall is time. It takes too long to do the hiking and shuttle together. Possibly wives can do the shuttle and camp together in the Anza Borrego State Park, Those interested will please contact me as soon as possible, and final plans will be made at the Nov. 2 DPS Meeting.
